Snakebite First Aid

If the correct first aid treatment is applied to a snakebite as soon as possible the chance of survival is greatly increased. The correct first aid procedure is known as the Pressure Immobilisation method. It works by limiting the spread of venom throughout the body.

Pressure - A broad constrictive bandage is applied to the affected area of the body (usually a limb) starting at the bite site and working towards the heart.

Immobilisation - Preventing movement of the affected area reduces the spread of venom throughout the body.

Where possible bring medical assistance to the patient.

Step 1: Apply a broad constrictive bandage starting at the bite site.

Step 2: Work towards the heart applying as much pressure as would be used with a sprained ankle.

Step 3: Bandage as far up the limb as possible leaving the extremities exposed

Step 4: Apply a splint to immobilise the affected limb.
